Setup guide
Put Inkstream on your PocketBook.
Four steps: install KOReader, add the Inkstream plugin, sign in, and protect it against firmware updates. No unlocking needed — a PocketBook lets you add apps over USB.
The easy way
Signed in to Inkstream? The installer does steps 01 to 04 for you in Chrome or Edge: plug in the PocketBook, pick it, done — nothing to drag or type.
01
Install KOReader
KOReader is the reading app Inkstream runs inside. It handles EPUB, PDF, CBZ, FB2, DjVu and more, and it's where the plugin lives. On a PocketBook you install it by copying a few files across.
- On your computer, download koreader-pocketbook-v2026.07.1.zip (40 MB) and unzip it. Use this version or a newer one from the KOReader releases — older versions crash on current PocketBook firmware.
- Connect the PocketBook with its USB cable. On the reader, choose to connect to the computer (usually PC link). It shows up as a drive.
- Copy two things, not the download folder. Open the unzipped
applicationsfolder on your computer. Select thekoreaderfolder and thekoreader.appfile inside it, and drop those two into theapplicationsfolder on the reader. They must sit directly in it:applications/koreader.app, not inside another folder. Don't drag the download folder or theapplicationsfolder itself — the reader then can't find KOReader, and on a Mac Finder may replace what's already there. - Open
system→binon the reader and copykoreader.appfrom the unzippedsystem/bininto it. Can't seesystem? Your computer hides it: on a Mac press Cmd + Shift + . in Finder; on Windows choose View → Show → Hidden items. Nobininsidesystem? Create it. - Eject the reader, unplug it and restart it (hold the power button). In Apps, KOReader is listed as @koreader, often at the bottom among the apps you added. It opens with a file browser — that is KOReader. Swipe down from the top for its menu.
02
Add Inkstream
The plugin adds Inkstream to KOReader's menu and sends your highlights, notes and reading sessions to your shelf over Wi-Fi.
- Download inkstream-plugin.zip on your computer and unzip it.
- Connect the PocketBook again and copy the
inkstream.kopluginfolder intoapplications/koreader/pluginson the reader. Check the folder is named exactlyinkstream.koplugin— KOReader ignores it otherwise. - Eject, unplug, and open KOReader. If it was still open, close it first with
☰ → Exit.
03
Sign in
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on, then in KOReader open
☰ → More tools → Inkstream. - Enter the username and password you chose when you created your account. The server address is already set.
- Choose Test connection. Sync is on by default, so everything you mark appears on your shelf after the next Wi-Fi sync. (You can pause it any time with Enable highlight sync in the same menu.)
No account yet?
Inkstream is invite-only for now. Ask the person who told you about it for an invitation link — you choose your username and password when you open it.
04
Protect it against firmware updates
PocketBook firmware updates sometimes remove KOReader's launcher, so the icon stops working even though your books and settings are still there. KOReader Rescue keeps a copy and puts it back.
- Download KOReader-Rescue.app and copy it into the
applicationsfolder on the reader, next tokoreader.app. - Eject, unplug, and open KOReader-Rescue from Applications once. It says Armed: your launcher is saved.
- If KOReader ever disappears after an update, open KOReader Rescue again. The repair page explains the rest.

When something breaks
- KOReader isn't in Applications. Check that
koreader.appsits directly inapplicationson the reader, not in a folder inside it. Then restart the reader. - KOReader shows "Don't Panic" or closes straight away. The version is probably too old for your firmware. Repeat step 01 with version 2026.07.1 or newer.
- KOReader stopped opening after a firmware update. Open KOReader Rescue (step 04), or follow the repair page.
- Inkstream isn't in the menu. Close KOReader with
☰ → Exitand reopen it. Then check the plugin folder name and place (step 02). - Test connection fails. Check Wi-Fi is on, then sign in on the website with the same username and password to make sure they're right.
